Join us for "Reconciling Our Future: Stories of Kanata and Canada" at the 2016 Canadian School of Peacebuilding with instructor Niigaanwewidam James Sinclair. While Canada has become a great nation-state, it has not yet come close to the original Iroquoian word Kanata, a "village." This is embodied in the recorded words and actions of Indigenous peoples throughout history, who have struggled for over two centuries to have their voices and gifts heard in history books, governmental policies, and the well-respected stories of this nation. The original foundations of Kanata are, however, there if we look, listen, and dialogue about what we see. In this course we will look at how Indigenous peoples have shaped Canada politically, socially, culturally, and economically – while providing unique, sustainable, and bountiful visions of a future for all.
This course is available for professional development, personal inspiration or academic credit. People who may benefit from this course include NGO staff and interns, activists and peace educators, community leaders, religious leaders, teachers and professors, undergraduate or graduate students, government officials, and anyone interested in peace work.
Recognizing that the costs of training can be a significant barrier to participants, we have kept this year's fees below the 2011 level. For those taking the course for personal or professional development, the fee is $542 per session. For those taking courses for academic credit, tuition is $748 per session. Payment can be made by credit card, cheque (payable to Canadian Mennonite University), wire transfer, or money order. Email csop@cmu.ca for more information. Your application is not complete and your seat in the course is not reserved until we have received full payment.
Books are required for participants taking a course for credit and will cost approximately an additional $100 per course. Course fees include a lunch banquet of great local food and inspiring speakers, on the Thursday of the week of the course.
